WNYC went on the air in 1924 and WQXR began in 1936. WNYC was a non-commercial public media enterprise owned and operated by the City of New York until January 1997, when the AM and FM licenses were purchased by the non-profit WNYC Foundation. WQXR was originally an independent commercial classical radio station purchased by The New York Times in 1944 and acquired by New York Public Radio, now the parent non-profit of WNYC, in 2009. Prior to the both stations employing websites to explain programming and promote their broadcasts, WNYC and WQXR mailed subscribers monthly and bimonthly program guides which also included playlists, features and other station-related information.
