The Erie Canal when first built and for some time after, was the only means of transportation aside from the highways, across New York state." [bottom of card]. Three draft animals - a horse and two mules - are pulling a barge along Erie Canal; overhead, a single green train car crosses the bridge spanning the canal and the towpath. People on the train and writing on side of the train are indiscernible.
